A complete lack of action

One of the best websites ever:

You're the Man Now Dog

search for "vader picard wheel of fortune" .....one of the all-time best.

FYI - this is what gets sent out at work. I'm confused here. Is this a guy catching some kids smoking out on a Colorado ski trail? Is this an American spy trudging through the harsh Eastern Bloc? Ohhhhh I get it.....it's obviously about blizzard-prone Fort Worth and keeping the manufacturing plant from being invaded by aliens. Got it.

Government - 1
Extraterrestrials - 0

Hockey is on a 2 week break for the participation in the Olympics, which the Canadians will win...again. Of course I hope the US does well, but I'm secretly rooting for the Fins! Bode Miller....what a choke job.

Spring Training in baseball is about to begin and am I ever pumped about the Rangers this year.

In basketball, the Mavs are still tearing it up, tied for the best record in the West. The Sooners are in 3rd place in the Big 12, with a big game at Colorado coming up tonight on ESPN2.

V-day musings

Happy Valentines Day blah blah blah. Not to seem like one of the typical v-day cynics, I just get bored with it quickly. There is hope for couples though. In fact, I hope all of my friends who are in relationships have these staggeringly beautiful moments of nervous butterfly twitches and unexplainable contentness. There is something wonderful about seeing that in others, and it almost makes up for the fact that I can't say that.

So it's been a few days since I updated...We played an amazing show over the weekend at Club Clearview in Deep Ellum. We played with 2 fantastic bands, What Made Milwaukee Famous and the Valentines. The energy was high and addictive. There is nothing like seeing people dance at your show to make you feel like you own the place. Sam from the Dallas Observer was front and center and exclaimed that if we keep this up, he will get behind us in a big way. There were friends from the past and new friends met and free beer and ........

Utter chaos.

While waiting outside for directions to the Valentine's afterparty, we witnessed a fight/shooting at an intersection in Deep Ellum - right on Elm St. We ran inside as soon as the shots were heard, and as far as I know, no one was actually killed. It kinda freaked everyone out, so I just went home. I just hope the morons who started it got plenty of jail time for that. Things like that drive me to never come to Deep Ellum anymore, and obviously I'm not the only one. Wake up Dallas. Wake up Deep Ellum club owners.

I will post show pics later....

Upcoming shows:
Voxtrot/Happy Bullets - the Cavern - Friday
Nada Surf/Rogue Wave - Gypsy Tea Room - Friday

and dont miss...

Pilotdrift/Supergrass - Gypsy Tea Room - Saturday

I'm listening to the new Clearlake CD - Amber. Mixed opinions so far...the production quality is 10 times better than their last CD....there are way too many straight forward rockers on here for a band as smart as these guys.....some of these rockers are pretty damn good though....I miss the more mellow, pensive songs....

The Schmammy's were on last night

How in the world did the worst album U2 has maybe ever put out beat Paul McCartney's amazing new CD for Album of the Year? The absurdity of it all is just comical. It's like whoever takes the biggest crap gets the longest standing ovation. Eerily similar to the State of the Union address.

And enough with the mega-band combinations too. It's getting out of hand - there must have been at least 38.

Why, Paul, why???

I just realized I've never seen Jay-Z look awkward until the end of this video! Awesome!

All basketball, beeyatches

This is two days old, but what a stifling performance from the Mavs over the Lakers on Tuesday night, holding Kobe to 24 pts. The Mavs have finally learned to add. It's not calculus here - it's complementing your incredible offense with a good, quick defense. It's adding. It's making a really good team even better. In years past, every game was a shootout - first to 120 points wins, and who doesn't like to see a ton of dunks, threes, and jumpshots falling? But by God, I wanna see some tenacious D, and I don't mean a fat, overrated comedic actor. This will make the Mavs a post-season threat and give some legitimacy to the Dallas franchise, which for so long has been looked upon as being soft and a flash-in-the-pan, regular season acrobatic circus. When the playoffs rolled around, no one took them seriously. All that will change this year. Gimme the Lakers in the first round, gimme the Spurs in the 2nd, the Suns in the Western Finals, and the ultra-good Pistons in the Championship. Up to now, the Mavs have proven they can beat every single one of these teams - it's time to prove it in the playoffs.

Last night the Sooners held off a desparate oklahoma state team for their first win in Pukewater in 6 years. It was a good bounce back game after the heartbreak in Lawrence. Although the Big XII title is probably out of reach by now, it's time to get some good momentum heading into the tournament and NCAA field of 64. The Big XII tournament title is definitley within reach. OU has shown it can play with any team now. Here's a great quote by Kelvin Sampson, the coach:

“It would be easy to say we could maybe be 4-5 (in the conference) or 5-4 but we could easily be 9-0,” Sampson said. “We haven’t played a team we couldn’t beat. We lost to Missouri. I wish we hadn’t played them, yet. Timing is everything. But we could’ve won the Nebraska game. We could’ve won the Missouri game. And we certainly could have won the game Sunday.”

I love Terrell Everett's snarl in this picture. Boomer Sooner baby.....

Hump Day Update

Congrats to the Pittsburgh Steelers on winning Super Bowl XL In honor of their victory and Ben's partying it up with college girls and tequila.....I want one of these.

Over the weekend I had double heartache as the Stars and the Sooners both dropped games. The hapless Blues beat the Stars in overtime....but we all know if it would have gone to a shootout, it's game over, Dallas. The OU basketball team lost at Kansas by 1 freakin point, with a couple of no-calls at the end that could have changed the outcome. Now, if the game is played in Norman, OU probably gets those calls and wins, just because of how home-court in basketball has such an officiating advantage. Take a look at the recent Duke/FSU game (at Duke) where Duke had a 43-11 free-throw shooting advantage. It's a problem that is getting a lot of talk right now. stupid Dook.

Speaking of officiating, it's been a rough year for referees in general. Just look at the NFL playoffs (Pitt vs Indy) and even the Super Bowl. Bad calls all over the place. Even in college football (not to be a total homer here, but OU did get robbed at Tech). anyway....

In music news, we are busy busy busy planning our "northerly jaunt." We have now basically confirmed a Cleveland date on March 3 and, of course, we're in Toronto on March 2. This is the band we're playing with in Cleveland for their CD release party. Needless to say, I'm kind of scared that we might:
a) get beat up
b) not go over so well with their crowd
c) get beat up
d) get beat up

But hey, at least we can hang out in "beautiful" Cleveland and see the world's largest rubber stamp and hopefully the river won't catch on fire.

SOUND Team's coming......
March 10 Dallas Good Records In-Store 4 P.M.
March 10 Dallas Gypsy Ballroom

Also, not to totally steal all my good info from GVB, here is an interesting mp3 from a band called the Evangelicals, who are based out of Norman, OK and are on the Austin-based label, Misra Records (Shearwater, Centromatic). It's sample-rific!

Brokeback Mountain

The movie is out and OH how the parodies are flying in.....

Booker has one called Broke Mac Mountain.

Stereogum has one called Brokeback to the Future.

Speaking of BTTF, am I the only one who wishes there would have been a 4th one? As long as it wasn't like "The Next Karate Kid" I think we can all keep our sanity....and as long as there aren't lines like this:

Julie Pierce: I wish I had courage like you.
Sergeant Kesuke Miyagi: I wish I had chocolate bar with almonds.

I think they could go even further into the future (more than 30 yrs) and see that Hilary Swank still looks like a man at 60 and that no one outside of our generation has heard of Ralph Macchio.

Broken Social Scene

These guys are one of my favorite bands and they just put out an incredible self-titled CD - best of last year, in my opinion. Here is a link of BSS playing on the Conan O'Brien show Tuesday night.

You might notice a couple of guest appearances in there.......first person to guess them in the comments wins.......uh......a uh....well..........my respect?

Also, to keep up with the SXSW shows/showcases, here is a nice website with constant updates.

Quick news

Dallas has a tough game with Nashville tonight, who is right behind the red wings in their division. In fact, the Preds come calling again in Dallas next Monday also. They have an outstanding goalie in Vokoun who is playing as one of the best in the West.

OU bball goes for the sweep tonight against the College Station Aggies. It will be tough. They are no push-over like they used to be.

Today is signing day for college football recruiting and OU is putting together an incredible class. Right now they were ranked #4 on ESPN and that was before the best DT in the nation just signed with them.

In music news, here are some good mp3 blogs to keep up with for the latest and greatest....
